Contribute Your Time and Expertise

Here at The SEA People we welcome motivated individuals who are willing contribute their time and skills to helping us Restore, Protect and Conserve the most biodiverse reefs on Earth.

As a small non-profit organisation, there often is more to do than our resources allow for, and with our founders/leadership team based full time in the field – where basic infrastructure such as internet can be limited –  willing individuals offer critical and much needed support in multiple areas.

Ways To Contribute

REMOTE CONTRIBUTION:

Remote contributors are our most important, most wanted, most needed and above all, our most impactful contributors.

These individuals play a very important role in our operations, and clearly recognise that the most valuable thing they can do to support our conservation effort is apply the skills they have to support our mission, from their home location.

Remote contribution requires commitment, initiative, sacrifice and a willingness to go above and beyond. Fulfilling the role of a Remote Contributor is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly.

These roles requires you to give your personal time and use your own resources, skills and know-how.  Sometimes it means long hours on the weekend, or after work or study. But helping to Restore, Protect and Conserve the world’s most biodiverse reefs requires time, dedication and passion… and most importantly the willingness and determination to consistently show up.

Our Remote Contributors are an essential part of our effort; over the years they have helped us secure funding, ensure that administrative, compliance and communication/public awareness tasks are completed to the highest standards.

Our Co-Founders and leaders are based in field, and cannot be everywhere and do everything at once, therefore our Remote Contributors offer the critical support needed to enable us to focus on the most pressing the task at hand: being present onsite to conduct fieldwork.

Our motivation and interest is exclusively in restoring, protecting and conserving the world’s most biodiverse coral reefs – and our Remote Contributors must reflect this in the effort and commitment they put in, and must be have relevant experience and skills in their field of volunteering.

FIELD CONTRIBUTION:

These positions are very rare and can only be offered to those that have been high impact, Remote Contributors for a minimum of 12 months beforehand.

We know it’s the dream of many to conduct conservation activities in the field, and we value and appreciate this passion and desire to contribute.

However, it is important to remember that short-term participation in our fieldwork requires training and time to understand our projects and adjust to remote living and a new culture. Investing this time and effort into developing short-term participant competencies detracts from our primary focus – delivering local community based conservation projects.

Our priority is to devote our time and resources to training and employing local people, as we believe this makes the greatest contribution to the local environment, community and economy.  For this reason, in general we do not support short-term voluntary positions unless we think the individual can have an immediate, positive and sustainable impact on our work and on the amazing communities and ecosystems within which we live.

Put simply, from an environmental, socio-cultural and economic perspective, we prioritise the training and hiring of local community members over and above that of hosting short term participants or interns from abroad.

This being said, we will consider applications on a case by case from:

1) Those who are planning to visit or are already in Raja Ampat, and are interested in volunteering or contributing to our work, we invite you contact us about joining us for a day of reef restoration. Click here for more information.

2) Remote Contributors (with high impact) who have actively supported to our cause for 12+ months from their location, and have been invited to join us in the field.

3) On rare occasions, those who wish to join us in the field may be considered in the following scenarios:

  • they bring with them a critical skill we need and do not yet have (which will be posted in ‘positions vacant’ below)
  • they provide an additional source of funding to further support the development of community based conservation projects (to be discussed, this is not a ‘pay and stay’ opportunity).

Please note, any foreigner that is offered field placement with us in Raja Ampat, will be required by law to obtain the relevant visa for the duration of their stay.  Their activities of will be conducted without any financial remuneration.

OTHER

We recognize that great impact comes from a diversity of skills, perspectives, and expertise. If you have skills you believe would contribute to our vision and mission, and help increase our impact, we welcome you to reach out.

Whether your strengths lie in research, grant writing, community engagement, graphic design, videography or another area, we invite passionate individuals who align with our mission to get involved. While we may not always have a specific role advertised, we are open to working with committed contributors who bring fresh ideas and innovative approaches to marine conservation in Raja Ampat.

If you’re keen to contribute, follow the “How To Apply” section below.

**Please note; we will prioritize those who are willing to be a remote contributor in the first instance. It is only in very rare circumstances – see ‘field contributor’ above – that we will consider a field contributor who has not completed this critical step first.**

How To Apply

Please send your application to admin@theseapeople.org and include* the following information:

  • your CV
  • an outline of your relevant experience
  • your motivation(s) for supporting our efforts, along with the contribution and impact you wish to make
  • your donation reference number*

We welcome applications from skilled, committed, and professionally minded volunteers who are passionate about marine conservation.

To help cover the costs of reviewing and processing volunteer applications, we invite you to make a €20 donation (see donate button to the right of the screen). This small contribution allows us to prioritise applicants who are genuinely dedicated to our cause, while also recognizing that reviewing applications—handled directly by our Co-Founders—takes time away from our core conservation efforts.

By ensuring that all applicants are serious about their commitment to marine conservation, we can focus our resources where they are needed most: delivering impactful, community-based conservation projects that Restore, Protect, and Conserve the world’s most biodiverse coral reefs.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

PLEASE NOTE: whilst many like the idea of contributing in a volunatry manner, the reality can be very different, and we must stress, it is not for everyone. Remote Contributors will spend time at home working independently, and may never get the chance to see us in the field.  And for those that do make it to the field, you may be living and working from remote villages with basic infrastructure and living conditions, or on a boat in close quarters with the rest of the team in a hot, tropical environment.  Therefore, we kindly request that you only apply if you have taken this reality into consideration and meet all the requirements.
