Whilst we\u2019d completed a drydock in April 2022, it was either do it again in Dec22\/Jan23, or wait until Dec 23 \u2013 something we were not willing to do in terms of maintenance and safety.<\/p>\n<p>After a successful dry dock, a decision was made to take a dive into the wood and wooden spaces above the waterline\u2026 and that turned out to be quite a deep dive\u2026 Over the course of 3 months, the team, along with support from local woodworkers, electricians and mechanic, walls, floors, ceilings, railings \u2013 pretty much anything\u00a0you can think of \u2013 was opened up, inspected, repaired if needed, re-fibreglassed and waterproofed.<\/p>\n<p>Completing all this was a critical task, that if ignored and delayed in favour of other\u00a0efforts, would ultimately have cost the foundation in more ways than one! With that in mind we are immensely grateful for the effort of all who contributed.\u00a0 As for\u00a0Arno, Piet, Pak John, Linus, Aldi and Petrus, you\u2019ve never seen a happier team than the moment we returned to the island and these &#8216;Orang Laut&#8217;\u00a0 (SEA People) were able to return to their more natural habitat &#8211; on and under the sea!<\/p>\n<p><i>*Legally our boat is named \u201cMastroAldo\u201d, a name we inherited but bears no meaning or\u00a0relevance to our mission.\u00a0 However, given it is\u00a0extremely complicated to change the boat&#8217;s name over here, and also because it&#8217;s considered bad luck\u2026 we are keeping this legal name, but\u00a0on paper only &#8211; day to day our flagship vessel will be referred to as \u2018Galaxea\u2019 &#8211; named after a\u00a0coral we love, and for the well aligned symbolism of the\u00a0\u2018galaxy&#8217;.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_video src=&#8221;https:\/\/youtu.be\/PkcYTDYT6qI&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_video][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;0px||||false|false&#8221; custom_margin_tablet=&#8221;0px||||false|false&#8221; custom_margin_phone=&#8221;0px||||false|false&#8221; custom_margin_last_edited=&#8221;on|phone&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h1><b>A Collaboration with Coralive<\/b><\/h1>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;-20px||||false|false&#8221; custom_margin_tablet=&#8221;-30px||||false|false&#8221; custom_margin_phone=&#8221;-30px||||false|false&#8221; custom_margin_last_edited=&#8221;on|phone&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span>In mid March, upon returning to our mooring at Yenbekwan Village we were\u00a0straight back in to our reef restoration effort. We started with a collaboration with dear friend, mentor and colleague, Aki Allahgholi, of\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/us14.mailchimp.com\/mctx\/clicks?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.coralive.org%2Fen%2F&amp;xid=d01c5c0dfa&amp;uid=176274601&amp;iid=71f3c89eab&amp;pool=cts&amp;v=2&amp;c=1682736427&amp;h=cb559dfd2d345d0b5201a0a37563d81ae5f2cad31558ccfdbdbc81c0e52674e8\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/us14.mailchimp.com\/mctx\/clicks?url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.coralive.org%252Fen%252F%26xid%3Dd01c5c0dfa%26uid%3D176274601%26iid%3D71f3c89eab%26pool%3Dcts%26v%3D2%26c%3D1682736427%26h%3Dcb559dfd2d345d0b5201a0a37563d81ae5f2cad31558ccfdbdbc81c0e52674e8&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1682822835270000&amp;usg=AOvVaw22Cl8f87R72ZeEg6I_j3vp\" rel=\"noopener\">Coralive<\/a><\/strong><span>\u00a0&#8211; an NGO dedicated to protecting\u00a0and restoring\u00a0healthy oceans around the world, with 9 reef restoration sites across 7 countries, along with multiple other community projects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Together, with the support of V-Sun, we restored 250sqm of degraded reef, utilising mineral accretion technology (MAT) &#8211; a method Aki uses frequently, but was new to our efforts and a first in the area.\u00a0 Known previously as &#8216;biorock&#8217;,\u00a0 this method supports coral growth by applying low voltage direct current electrolysis, and provides us with the opportunity to compare and contrast our low tech, low cost community based approach with an innovative, yet more costly, technological based approach.\u00a0 The end goal of this collaboration is to determine which method performs best over time within the remote Raja Ampat context, and ideally we would like to determine whether it is feasible to combine the best of both worlds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Joining Aki was\u00a0Daniel Bichsel, professional videographer and photographer who documented the effort&#8230; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Here in Raja Ampat; cultural barriers, expectations and traditional gender heirachies can prevent girls and women from participating in the workplace and leading conservation efforts.\u00a0\u00a0Yet increasingly, this is changing and women are beginning to not only take an interest, but a more active role in conservation, and are working harder to apply their skills and experience to contribute to the protection of the natural world.<\/p>\n<p>After 2 years of searching for the right female candidate to join our team,\u00a0and considering how\u00a0integrate her into the team in a culturally appropriate manner, we met Cori &#8211; the younger cousin of Linus, one of our current Coral Gardeners.\u00a0 A\u00a0graduate of marine biology from University of Papua,\u00a0Cori moved to Waisai in 2022\u00a0to care for her younger family members.\u00a0 With skilled employment opportunities rare in Raja Ampat, Cori was faced with a\u00a0choice: stay\u00a0and meet familial obligations potentially without paid work OR move away and seek employment, ideally in a position in line with her degree.<\/p>\n<p>With family in Yenbekwan village\u00a0&#8211; the site of our current restoration effort &#8211;\u00a0 and working\u00a0just 45mins from Waisai, Cori no longer has to\u00a0make this choice: she can\u00a0be close to home whilst being gainfully employed in a position that utilises, and further enhances and expands upon the knowledge\u00a0gained during her studies.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome Cori, we are glad to have you with us and firmly believe that your inclusion in our team will change the dynamics of our community based conservation effort and make it more effective than ever before.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Having joined us in April, Andika, who is originally from Bekasi (Java), is currently pursuing a Master&#8217;s degree in Local Development from the University of Padua in Italy, and joins us to complete the field component of his degree.<\/p>\n<p>Andika previously worked with non-profit organizations focussing on peatland conservation, farmer empowerment, and territorial sustainability in other remote areas of Indonesia, which have provided him with experience and skills that will help him achieve his goals here in Raja Ampat.<\/p>\n<p>With past involvement in social economy research, local community and stakeholder engagement regarding the importance of responsible land use practices, during his time with us Andika will be focussing on assisting in the preliminary stages of obtaining an internationally recognised sustainable certification for Mansuar Island.\u00a0 This will involve the multi-disciplinary task of gathering information from local people relating to understanding, hopes and expectations around &#8216;sustainable practice&#8217;.\u00a0 Through a combination of conversation and informal group discussion, Andika will engage with a broad range of community members in order to better understand their perspective on environment and economy in Raja Ampat.<\/p>\n<p>This process will provide valuable insight into the 4 communities on Mansuar islands, and represents an important and (very!) rare effort to gain a deeper insight into community beliefs, needs and challenges. Having crossed paths in 2021, a mutual standing passion and commitment to the natural world, community based conservation and climate action brought us to where we are today; collaborating on the expansion of Yaf Keru in order to reach our goal of 1ha of reef restored per year.<\/span><br \/><span>Since its founding in 2007, VNV has been dedicated to empowering rural communities in the fight against climate change. Through their community-led programs, they have impacted over 7 million rural households and counting, successfully covering 5 million hectares under land use and forestry management. Waking up in the dense canopy each morning brings visitors so much closer to the unique forest animals, including gibbons, who&#8217;s song is <span>considered as one of the most beautiful rhythms in the wildlife world.
